Things that bring a smile to your face

Life is beautiful, extraordinary, and filled with opportunities.  We all know that right? But sometimes, just sometimes, life can provide barriers (obstacles if you will) that serve to compete with the path of happiness we all so wish to skip along.  It can throw up irritating little hurdles that you just have to hop over and carry on  as you dance along your merry way.  At least that’s the slant on life I try my best to uphold.  It’s not easy, and sometimes it can be a downright battle when you feel like you are constantly trying to push, heave and kick obstacles out of your way like a relentless Ninja.  But even a Ninja has down days right?! Anyway, today was one of those days for me.  But do you know what really cheered me up when I was feeling a bit fed up? This picture of my Dog Harvey (left) and his friend Harvey (right).  Whilst on the surface this is a silly picture of two bemused dogs with towels on their heads, …

How To Unlock Your Creativity- An Essential Tool

Until recently, I used to largely view creativity as a talent that some individuals are born with.  Either you have it, or you don’t- as simple as that.  As a self taught artist, I fully understand that an innate ability for creativity is not enough on its own. In order to improve your creative endeavors, it takes a HUGE amount of commitment, practice and time.  But what if there were other ways to improve your ability to be creative?  What if the answer was hidden away inside yourself, just outside of your conscious grasp?   In the summer of 2013, I felt like I was falling down a dark hole.  I was working in a job that gave me no satisfaction, and I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in longer than I dared to remember.  My life was zapped of the creative outlet that I so desperately craved.  It was only when I finally realised what I was missing and took decisive action to change this that I began to feel much better 🙂  I started painting almost …

Overcoming your fears

Each and every one of us probably has something we are afraid of- it’s perfectly natural, nothing to be ashamed of, and simply part of being human. Whether you are afraid of spiders, the dark, snakes, clowns or even conkers- there’s a big scary world out there with a million different things to be afraid of.  Scary thought? FEAR NOT, you can exert a level of control over your worst fears and even master them.  And that’s an empowering and encouraging little thought isn’t it? As fears go, I have many.  You might say that I am a bit of a wimp, a baby, a ‘scaredy cat’ or a big girl’s blouse.  At an everyday level, I am scared of spiders, crane flies (I don’t care what anybody says, those things are FLYING SPIDERS), melon seeds and the dark after watching a horror film.  On a deeper and more phobic level, I am petrified of heights to the point that even looking a an image of a great height, makes me feel giddy. After graduating from …

Why do we want to be loved?

Love is one of the most sought after feelings in the human condition.  It should come as no surprise then, that it is ultimately a favourite source of inspiration for writers, musicians, and artists alike.  It is something which drives us, something which fulfils us, and something which simply makes us happy.  Capturing and successfully conveying the deep and meaningful emotions that accompany love is one of the most rewarding challenges an artist can face, and one which I thoroughly enjoy.  Love can be simple, or entirely complicated.  It provides a whole rainforest  of possibilities for a writer or an artist to explore, with a thousand different seasons to depict. But what is it about love that we so desperately seek and desire in our lives to feel ‘whole’? 1) SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST Did the bond of love originally serve a higher evolutionary purpose in primitive humans for the protection and nurture of their offspring?  From a logical point of view, yes.   If a child had both parents working as a unit to …
