Escape from reality

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.” – Helen Keller. That’s kind of what painting is about. Pouring your heart and soul into a canvas, bare and exposed for everyone to see. My paintings are not about realism, detail or perfection. They are about colour, emotions and expression. Every brush stroke is a cathartic healing process, an escape from reality and into peace โ˜ฎ๏ธ

Messy mind, happy heart?

My studio is messy, I’m not going to lie. I’m not organised, nothing has a dedicated place, and I mainly paint on the floor using cardboard boxes to rest my canvases on. Classy right? Everything in there is pretty much covered in paint splats..and if it isn’t, it will be. But despite the chaos, it’s the one place I feel surprisingly calm. The exciting news is that I have a new studio space being prepared ASAP. Maybe I’ll keep it tidy…watch this space.

Do what you love

Art is a journey. A process, an experiment, an expectation of what the next piece will be. It’s full of emotion, self criticism, doubt, hope, joy, apathy, frustration, bliss, shame and pride. Next time you look at a piece of work by an artist, know that you are not just viewing brush marks on a canvas, but fear of failure, judgement, bravery, a labour of love and an undying drive to never stop fighting to do what you love. http://www.emilylouiseheard.com

Find your voice

It’s not until very recently I’ve found the art I want to keep creating. My path as a self taught artist hasn’t been easy, and at times I’ve berated myself, criticized everything about my work and almost given up. I didn’t have a defined voice or ‘brand’ even though I was desperately trying to find it. The moment I stopped frantically asking myself ‘what defines me as an artist’ and just painted straight from my heart I found the answer. If you’re struggling with the same thing, stop judging yourself! Let it happen naturally โค๐ŸŒˆ It’s a journey.

Find your flow

Pick up a paintbrush. Don’t think about it, don’t overthink, judge or criticize yourself. Just paint. Watch the bright and beautiful colours swirl and splash together on the canvas. Become immersed in a quiet and peaceful world entirely of your own making. Find your flow.
